When my mom told me that she had gone into my room without my permission and stolen rare and valuable artifacts out of my closet, I was a little pissed at first, but I soon started to see it as funny and a real gift. She’d gotten the thumbs-up from the school. It was really happening. We were going to the reunion!

Before we left for Birmingham, I got the following letter from Dr. Revel, outlining his expectations for what I would be doing there. It sounded so official and important. He sent similar, personalized letters to all of the players and other attendees. My excitement, already high, smashed through the roof.

Dear Cam,

I am pleased to invite you to be part of our research team for our Birmingham, Alabama, research trip on June 1–4. The events that we will be covering and help sponsoring during this research trip will be as follows: the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Rickwood Field; Southern League and Negro League Players Reunions; Negro League Reception at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame; and the Alabama Negro League Players Association and Museum of Negro League and Southern League Baseball History Sports Banquet.

The focal point of the trip is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Rickwood Field which as you know was the home of the Birmingham Barons (Southern League) and Birmingham Black Barons (Negro American League). Rickwood is the oldest professional baseball park in the United States and this is the first time that both white and Black players who shared a stadium have been brought together to recognize their baseball accomplishments.

I anticipate that we should have 10–15 Southern League players and as many as 30 Negro League players attending the events. Harmon Killebrew (Member of National Baseball Hall of Fame and former Chattanooga player) will be one of the special guests.

Your specific assignments during this research trip will be helping with the players’ portrait sessions, oral histories interviews, and hosting the ball players. In addition, I would like you to meet with Dr. Linda Revel [Layton’s wife] and Dr. Debra Horne as they are developing an educational program on researching Negro League baseball that will be used in public schools. Your research in Negro League baseball has been exemplary and you will prove to be an invaluable resource to their work. I especially want you to share your research techniques with Dr. Revel and Dr. Horne. This program is something that next year will be taken to the Birmingham area public school systems. It is also a program that could be used in your local school system back home.

This trip represents a once in a lifetime opportunity in Negro League baseball research. We look forward to you and your family being a part of it. Your participation in this event will help preserve the history of Negro League baseball in America. The educational experiences that you receive during this project should be very valuable to your high school experience and will undoubtedly look very good on your college applications.
